Two Swamis and the beach

Footsteps in sand

My last entry was quite a serious one.The subject matter was important and grave. To create some variety, here is some text and pictures from my son JayaGurupad in Mumbai

He shares with us the sweet simplicity of his experience:

"Some of you may know that last October I had an opportunity of a break from Mumbai, in the form of an invitation from Radhanath Swami to spend some time with him in California. Due to Maharaja’s ill health he was staying for one month with Giriraja Swami at his house in Carpentaria.

Every evening the two Swamis would go for a japa walk along the beach. As the orange sun set beneath the waves, they walked together along the sand, chanting quietly.

Wanting to capture my time with them on film, I decided this was the perfect opportunity. Thus one evening, half way through my stay, I brought my camera along. Knowing that Radhanath Swami doesn’t like a camera in his face [I guess he is not alone] I did not feel like putting him in such a situation.

Instead I decided to take pictures without mention, and in a way that would not disturb him. As the two Swamis walked along the beach, I walked behind clicking away. These are the results.

Upon returning home, I looked through my shots, and decided next japa walk I’d take even better ones. That opportunity never came, as I was otherwise engaged during the following days.

The last day, was my last chance! After Prasad, as Maharaja was walking to his room, I pulled out my camera and bravely started clicking.

As he walked past, I apologized, explained that I’d been asked to take pictures by my family, who would not be happy if I returned empty handed. He smiled and did not say anything.

That afternoon I left.

As I look through these pictures, I’m reminded of Maharaj’s kindness, of the time he so freely gave, and especially of the unconditional affection he showed towards me.

But most of all, I like remembering that moss strewn beach, with pelicans, surfers, sand, waves and rocks : and myself walking behind the twin trails of shoeprints leading to two swamis, their saffron clothes fluttering in the breeze."
