Walking by the Yamuna River one cold Vrindavana evening we observed a group of pilgrims perfoming evening worship. The Yamuna River is considered sacred, for in her waters Sri Krishna bathed and played. For hundreds of years, this arotik has been performed every evening, while individual pilgrims place small leaf cups with tiny flames as their offerings
.
As day turned to night the flames from the ghee lamp's wicks all turned into a huge blaze.
Then the lamp, now firey hot, was placed on a stone slab for all present to honor the offered flame by passing their hands over the heat and touching them to their heads.
Here's a nice blessing given by Yamuna
May the Yamuna river, which constantly increases the happiness of Sri Sri Radha and Krishna - where birds are flying everywhere - where the fragrance of flowers fills the air - where many beautiful forest groves are reflected in her waters -
maintain you by awarding you happiness.
